A Dinner Together

“Pryvit, Vanya.” She responded and smiled up at her brother, glad to see him again. It had been far too long since they have done something like this. Sometimes, she felt as if she did not make enough effort as a good older sister should. “Come inside!” She made a motion to usher him inside and out of the cold, offering him a quick but firm hug as he stepped inside. 

“I may have gone overboard in the kitchen, so you can take leftovers home with you, if you like.” She shook her head with a soft chuckle. Overboard was an understatement. She lead the way to her kitchen table which was covered with the various dishes she had cooked over the course of the day. 

He returned the hug graciously, giving her shoulder a comforting squeeze before he entered the home, a small chuckle surfacing from him at her generosity. He stepped in, already more comforted by the amiable presence of her home, removing his gloves from his hands and pocketing them. The Russian took in a large breath through his nose, exhaling lightly. “Ah, it smells so wonderful. Is that borsch that I smell, as well? Ah, you make the best borsch~! I am so happy,” Ivan admitted, making his way to the kitchen with the Ukrainian woman.

Sure enough, it was indeed a sight to uphold, and she hadn’t been kidding when she mentioned the possibility of left overs. He blinked, frozen for a moment and almost overwhelmed by the… feast that was before him. “How long… did it take you to make all of this?” he found himself asking, finding that he was slightly concerned that there was just so much here. A near human wouldn’t be able to conjure this much up in a single day!

She beamed her joy up at the larger nation as he returned her embrace. It was wonderful to hold him tight like that, even for just a moment. It brought back memories of happier times that seemed so far and few in between. The thought just made her determined to make more of them.  

“Ah… Well…” Yekaterina replied with an embarrassed chuckle, running a hand through the back of her short hair. ”I have spent most of the day in the kitchen, I think.” Almost all of the day, except the for the earliest part of morning she had spent doing chores on her farm. “… I get carried away with things sometimes, but I enjoy it… I guess it just means we have a lot of different food to chose from tonight.”

She pulled a seat out from the table and sat. “Come and sit, before things start getting cold!”

He blinked slowly for a long while, taking his time in inspecting the different elements of their dinner before he nodded, giving his sister a smile and heading towards his designated seat. “It was not necessary for you to have gone so far, but you have once again shown your utmost kindness once again…” he sighed, feeling a slight warmth at that thought surface in his chest.

“Well, we shall eat then? And a thanks to your labor as well, sestra.”

“Oh, I do not mind. I have fun in the kitchen and I enjoy company over to share with.” She answered with a chuckle. “Especially if the company is family.” Humming a bit, she reached over, setting a plate and bowl in front of each of them. “That sounds good to me!” Truth be told, she was pretty hungry after all of her work in the kitchen during the day.

Ah, that is nice and I am glad to know that you are doing well. Ah, that does remind me I may need to replace my kitchen knives soon. [Taps her chin.]
